This article is about Microsoft Seadragon, a large image viewer being developed by Microsoft Live Labs.

Seadragon is a browser capable, large image viewer. Images stored anywhere on the internet or private network,  can be presented through a standard web browser on a personal computer or a mobile devices, such as the iPhone.

Seadragon, the company was origionally named Sand Codex. Seadragon was bought by Microsoft in 2006. Seadragon now available thorough Microsoft Live Labs has some interesting capabilities.

• Seadragon.com allows you to share virtually any size image o the web
• Size doesn’t matter. sizes 5 to 200 mega pixels is supported.
• No matter what the image size, it loads quickly.
• The embedded viewer adjusts dynamically to the layout of the web page
• Seadragon uses Silverlight & Ajax

SeaDragon is available for use free at SeaDragon.com. Seadragon.com is web service that enables the use of the Sedragon viewer by website publishers.

Here is Seadragon at work with a picture I took last year on Independence Pass, CO.

Use the buttons to view, zoom, pan-into, the images. The original image your looking at is 4.3mb in in size.

The viewer can easily be embedded onto any webpage,  and it’s use is free.

1. Upload the image to a web server.
2. Go to Seadragon.com input the URL to the image uploaded in item 1.
3. Copy and past the script into a web page.
